Film: An Introduction

My passion for film arose when I first went to a videography summer camp in the summer before eighth grade. I've been to a film summer camp every summer break ever since then, from Digital Media Academy's program to New York Film Academy's. I took my first film class in my freshman year of high school, and when I came to Deerfield, I've continued to film various events around campus at the request of friends and teachers, in additional to creating documentaries and promotional videos in my co-curricular time after classes.

Here are some of the videos I've made, comprised of a brief overview and a link to either the video or its trailer. You can watch more of these videos on my YouTube or Vimeo channel. You can also download these videos and more in the downloads section.

Deerfield Academy Senior Video (2017)

Graduating can be hard, and I loved my time at Deerfield Academy, so I made this video for our class, the class of 2017, to remember our days of glory at the Academy. Spring term, I filmed various events and gathered footage from across campus to create tihs short video. I also made a longer, 35 minute video comprising of interviews of the senior class, which you can obtain if you email me at alexanderguo99@gmail.com

Deerfield Academy Performing Arts Promotional (2017)

Deerfield Academy's performing arts department is ever expanding and develops the talent of all aspiring performing artists in the disciplines of music, theater, and dance. I interviewed almost two dozen students and teachers to discover what makes Deerfield's performing arts program special.

Deerfield Academy: More Than A School (2016)

Four people. Four stories. One school. Watch as four Deerfield students and alumni take to the stage and tell their stories -- recounts of their experiences at Deerfield and what the school means to them. This was created throughout the 2015-2016 school year, and submitted to various film festivals. As of August 2016, this film has been selected for screening at the All American High School Film Festival, the Go Independent Film Festival, and the Chelsea Film Festival. The following is the trailer.

The Road to Our Roots (2016)

In the spring of 2016, I traveled with my friends Claire and Amanda to three vastly different cities of China to genuinely explore our heritage. Through our travels, we witnessed the striking beauty of the mountains and rivers in Guilin, experienced the spicy yet extremely delicious Chengdu food, and hiked up sand dunes in the Taklamakan Desert in Dunhuang. We also met dozens of friendly locals who were willing to be interviewed wherever we went. Upon the conclusion of this 9-day tour, we are creating a 1-hour long travel-documentary of our experiences in the road to our roots. Through making the video, we hope to start an organization, called Share Our Globe, to encourage others to also explore parts of their heritage that they never knew existed. The following is a short, 1-minute teaser.

Healthy Food Systems: Deerfield Academy and Local Farms (2015)

In my first year at Deerfield, I noticed the immediate difference in my surroundings -- a drastic change from the bustling city of Beijing to the countryside of western Massachusetts. I became increasingly aware of how we source of food. I then created this documentary to give some deeper insight on healthy food, organic food, and service at local farms. I also aimed to provide some insight on food justice. This video was a finalist at the Hotchkiss Film Festival and selected for screening at the All American High School Film Festival and Boston Kids International Film Festival.

International School of Beijing: A Promotional Video (2014)

Produced in my first real class for film at school, I learned a lot in the process, while deeply enjoying creating something for my school. It was my seventh and last year at the International School of Beijing, and it was a perfect opportunity to showcase my school as I prepared to leave. It focuses on two seemingly antithetical subjects -- music and science, and how ISB provides an amazing education in both.

Deerfield Academy Football: Home Opener Hype Video (2015)

At Deerfield, I created videos not just because I had some insight and wanted to make a video that was interesting, enjoyable, and educational, but also because I had a strong commitment to service. So when Captain Deerfield (the senior voted as head cheerleader) asked me to make a video for the varsity football team, I gladly agreed. Below is this hype video.

Deerfield Academy Winter Musical: Cabaret (2016)

Continuing my commitment to service, I filmed the Deerfield winter musical, Cabaret. I used four separate cameras at four angles, positions, and focal lengths, and edited together a full-length video of the performance. This was received extremely well by the Deerfield community, and the video on YouTube has already over 9000 views and is continuing to increase. Below is the full video.
